Welcome

March 27, 2009

Dear Friends:

joseph castroI am pleased to announce the launch of the website for the Preparing a New Generation of Leaders in the Health Professions Initiative.  We appreciate your advice and support as UCSF focuses renewed attention and energy on areas related to increasing the number of young people from diverse backgrounds who pursue a health science education.

Since last October, when we officially launched the initiative with Daniel Boggan, Chair of the California Endowment as our keynote speaker, we have hosted other forums and in-depth discussions with leaders from throughout the country to spread the word about our work. In light of recent events in Washington D.C., the timing of our initiative could not have been better.

In February, UCSF hosted a meeting with national leaders to discuss trends impacting student decisions to pursue a health professions career. Reducing student debt was the subject matter covered by guest speakers from important organizations such as the California Medical Association Foundation, Kaiser Permanente, College Access, the City and County of San Francisco, Greenlining Institute, and many others who joined UCSF student leaders and faculty for this lively discussion.  Please feel free to visit the website to review our meeting summary.  I would also welcome any other comments or suggestions you have about this important topic.

Later this Spring, we will host an issue forum that will focus on educational technology.   You are invited to share your thoughts and recommendations about how UCSF might reshape and enhance its educational technology infrastructure to better support our overall goal of preparing the next generation of leaders in the health professions.  We look forward to engaging with you and others on this important topic.  Please feel free to share our web site with your colleagues.

Again, thank you for participating in this initiative. I look forward to seeing and hearing from you soon.
